History

The idea to publish a scientific and practical journal in memory of Prof. Gavriil Ilizarov, the founder of the method of transosseous osteosynthesis, appeared after his death on the initiative of his disciples in the world orthopaedic community for whom G.A. Ilizarov remains to be an innovative scientists and surgeon that made a revolution in the field of orthopaedics. They also proposed a journal title, ORTHOPAEDIC GENIUS.

The journal was first published in English in Pakistan in 1994 and was planned to be distributed abroad. However, due to political events in Pakistan only 3 issues were published. Therefore and in spite of all economic difficulties in Russia, on the initiative of Prof. Vladimir Shevtsov, director of the RISC for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedic in Kurgan, it was decided to register the journal in Russia and continue to publish the results and research of the Ilizarov school.

The journal Genij Ortopedii (translated as Orthopaedic Genius from Russian) was first registered by the Ural regional department on periodical publications (Ekaterinbug, ¹ Å-1270, January 30, 1995) and reregistered by the RF Committee on publishing (¹ 013933, August 7, 1995) due to expansion of its distribution to other territories and introduction of the English language alongside with Russian. The journal was established by the RISC for Restorative Traumatology and Orthopaedics and the Kurgan Regional Ilizarov Foundation. The journal circulation frequency has been kept as one issue in three months.

So, the first issue was published in Russia in September 1995 and one of the received greeting to the event was from Prof. N.V. Kornilov, chief traumatologist and orthopedist of Russia and the editor-in-chief of Travmatologia i ortopedia Rossii at that time who wished the journal to become a printed monument to G.A. Ilizarov and acquire a wide circle of readers.

In October 1996, the editorial boards of Genij Ortopedii and Bulletin of Hospital for Joint Diseases (USA) agreed on exchanging the abstracts to the articles published in both journals. Both parties were interested in the agreement as it assisted in providing useful information: on one side, the Ilizarov center that studied and applied the Ilizarov method was opened at the New York Hospital for Joint Diseases and Prof. V.I. Shevtsov was elected its honored director, and on the other side the Russian specialists at local hospitals could obtain the information from this foreign journal as they could not subscribe to expensive foreign literature.

The second plenary meeting of the All-Russia association of traumatologists and orthopedists that was held on September 18-20, 1996 in Rostov-on-Don stated that there were four major publications in the orthopaedic field in Russia, Annaly Travmatologii i Ortopedii (Samara), Vestnik Travmatologii I Ortopedii imeni N.N. Priorova ( Moscow), Travmatologia i Ortopedia (St. Petersburg) and Genij Ortopedii (Kurgan). In 1997, Genij Ortopedii acquired an ISSN 1028-4427.

Recently, the journal has been published at PrintExpress Ltd (Kurgan). The number of articles per issue has been increased to 30 due to the growing number of submitted papers. Rospechat Agency index for subscription in Russia is 81417. Foreign subscribers can request the journal directly at the subscription and distribution sales manager of the Russian Ilizarov center.

During 13 years under the leadership of Prof. Shevtsov, the journal has become a tribune for successors and developers of the method of transosseous osteosynthesis and offers its readers novel treatment solutions and scientific achievements.
